Sigismund BENDEL

Sigismund Bendel was born on September 14, 1914 in Piatra Neamț, in present-day Romania. He moved to France in the 1930s and settled in Paris. When he was arrested on November 4, 1943 in the French capital for not wearing his yellow star, Sigismund was 29 years old and a student. He was first interned in Drancy under the number 7605. He was deported by convoy 64 to Auschwitz on December 7, 1943. It is strange because we did not find his number in Auschwitz, even though he survived and worked in the annex camp of Buna Monowitz as a mason. He was assigned to work as a doctor alongside the infamous Josef Mengele, also known as "The Angel of Death" because he experimented with new "medical" techniques that often proved fatal. Sigismund worked with him in the Birkenau camp from February 27, 1944 until January 18, 1945 in the Gypsy camp. From January 25, 1945, he was interned in the Mauthausen camp under the number 119537. From January 29, 1945, he worked in the annex camp in Ebensee and remained there until his liberation on May 6, 1945.
